WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?
Permaculture is an ethical design system that observes and follows
the patterns of nature to provide for human needs while protecting the earth so
that it can keep on giving. It teaches
us how to work with nature rather than against it.
Permaculture design techniques encourage land use that integrates principles
of ecology and applies lessons from nature. It teaches us to create settings
and construct ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and the
resilience of natural ecosystems.

WHY WESTCLIFFE?
Situated on the
eastern base of the magestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado, Westcliffe is a welcoming vacation
destination. The friendly small town
environment offers a special opportunity to envision a sustainable future. Early settlers and miners built successful
lives in this isolated valley, giving current residents confidence that they
could too – if they only could remember the old ways. Bringing a Permaculture
education to our community will help Custer
County become sustainable
again, while giving non-residents the opportunity to experience our beautiful
valley, including hiking in the Sangres, while they learn how to take
sustainability and local resiliency to their own communities.
In addition to the
combination of education from awesome teachers who live by their principles and hands-on experience, students
will actively participate in planning and designing Permaculture sites,
including the new Cliffs
Park Community
Garden. (see http://cliffsparkgarden.ning.com ) Upon successful completion of the Course,
students will receive a Permaculture Design Certificate which will allow them
to sell their new design services to others using the name “Permaculture.”
The Course will be
centered from the grounds of an off-grid home to which the principles of Permaculture
have been gradually applied since the owner completed a similar Course in 2007.
COST
$1250
