Transition Initiative

October 2009 - April 2010 Sustainable Ways introduced to our community the international movement to recognize the inevitable changes the future will bring with regard to climate change, increasing energy costs, and economic instability as well as the opportunity work together to develop local resiliency specific to the Wet Mountain Valley so that we can weather these changes in abundance and grace.  This is a bottom-up grassroots movement that we can use as a model for local action.

Transition Town Movie Nights  provided the forum for learning about Transition initiatives and sharing ideas on how they could apply to the Wet Mountain Valley. more information  Identification of resiliency resources and ideas about potential projects to increase local resiliency during the discussion portion of each movie night were posted on sticky notes.   For a summary of the content of all sticky notes, click here

The Kick-off Movie night took place at the Westcliffe Library on October 16.  We viewed Episode 8, ‘Energy Descent Pathways’ of the British TV show "Power Down." This is available in its entirety on the internet at http://transitionculture.org/shop/the-powerdown-show/ .  Sustainable Ways  purchased the DVD of the full Power Down series and has donated it to the West Custer County Library in Westcliffe where it can be checked out for viewing by individuals.

Nov. 8, 60 Minutes had a very interesting segment on US vulnerability to cyber attacks that could take down our power grid, among other things, and leave us helpless - and in chaos. It has been done in Brazil and left a city without power for several days. In the US rolling blackout would likely occur, covering massive areas of the US. The segment sees the threat as very real and something people just don't want to think about. See http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/06/60minutes/main5555565.shtml

All the more reason to proceed with a resiliency audit of our community - and to begin to improve our situation - create more resiliency. We might not have to wait for a post petroleum world, climate change, and/or economic challenges....

The Westcliffe Library has a copy of "The Transition Handbook: from oil dependency to local resilience."
